Not long after midday Arryn could see the rise in the ground that signaled the approaching ridgeline and the ravine beyond. He had been here once before when their company had first came north to aid in the war. Little had changed in the time that had passed.
The ravine opened wide and deep before them, making the bridge seem narrow and delicate as the careful laid stones and arches stretched across the void. The bridge was old but still stood strong. It had been built before the Sundering wars, when Andohra and Dashra were under the rule of Vagath’Oth.
Arryn’s eyes flitted back and forth searching the far side of the ravine. Everything seemed to be still. No signs of—
What is that?
His eyes locked high on the far side of the ravine; in the treeline the sunlight danced on dark polished steel. Grieydn saw it too and was getting his bow ready next to him.
“Better set your string Arryn, it is about to begin.”
“Shields! Lines and Shields!” Dveargo bellowed the command as the first screaming quarrels smashed into the front group of spearmen at the bridge head. The spearmen quickly formed lines, presenting a wall of their tall shields to the enemy. More and more quarrels flew across the ravine, splintering off of rocks or clattering into the shields of the spearmen.
Arryn knew what would be next, yet his heart still jumped when his ears heard the order.
“Archers to the front, ready your bows!”
